Brian has Elvis in a shoebox.

I don’t know how and when he and Seth managed to sneak out of detention to grab him. I don’t know what they’re going to do with him, but I don’t like it one bit.

Sliming was bad enough. Egg salad was even worse. But they’ve gone way, way over the line. I gave Principal Klein my word that we wouldn’t do anything else wrong.

We all sit on the gym floor. It stinks in here and I’m sweating, and I rub my hands with hand sanitizer. Then I stand up and take a deep breath.

I avoided Brian and Seth all afternoon. I don’t know what they are planning to do with Elvis, and I don’t want to be locked in a closet again, but I need to speak up. I’ll tell Brian and Seth they have to return Elvis immediately. It’s my job as team captain, even if I don’t have a team anymore to captain.

“Sit down, George!” orders my teacher, Mr. Foley. He sits in a chair he brought into the gym, and is facing all of us. “You’re supposed to be writing an essay on good sportsmanship.”

I sit back down, secretly relieved. I’ll talk to Brian and Seth later.

I start to write, but I don’t just write one page about good sportsmanship, I write four pages. I write about how winning doesn’t mean anything if you don’t win honestly, but playing honestly isn’t enough. You also have to make sure everyone else plays honestly, too. I feel guilty the entire time I write.

I wasn’t expelled today, but maybe I should have been.

Brian and Seth smirk. They don’t even attempt to write an essay, and instead spend their time passing notes. I hear faint sounds from Brian’s shoebox.

I will say something to them right after detention, I promise myself.
